Review: 5-star Book, “Fodor’s Complete African Safari Planner”

Fodor’s The Complete African Safari Planner, 2nd Edition: with Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Kenya, and the Seychelles (Full-color Travel Guide)

Don’t leave home without it, June 29, 2011

Huge improvements in what was already a top-flight series of books! We’ve used Fodor guides for years almost everywhere we travel, and since our next destination is Africa and the Seychelles, we got this new one. Their use of dramatic photos and design elements is 21st-Century, yet they retain the familiar categories and features. Well worth every penny of the price, this is like having a team of experienced tour guides at your side. More complete and informative than Lonely Planet guides. Minor quibbles: We loved and followed the Fodor’s feature called “A Good Walk” in earlier city guides, yet I don’t see it in my cursory perusal of this new one (obviously it wouldn’t apply in the safari sections, but I don’t see it in Johannesburg, either. Perhaps it’s not a “walking” town); also, the Seychelles section doesn’t seem to mention any warning about the potential of Somalia piracy in the seas there, which has had some tragic impact lately. If I find these things in my closer reading, I’ll update this review, but as it is, I already give this guide a full five stars.
